Death Valley Video

Last week I gave myself some homework: create a 2-minute video that combines the following…

  1. Film footage I captured in Death Valley with my new Nikon Z8 camera

  2. An original music composition inspired by the desert

  3. And written words to provide a narrative arch to the video

The practical goal of the assignment was for me to deep dive into Final Cut Pro, to quickly ramp up the learning curve of the software.

The artistic goal of the assignment was to create something inspiring that could live up to the beauty of the desert landscape.

The result: I achieved the practical goal (FCP is very intuitive), but I’m not sure about the artistic goal. I really like the music and the cinematography. But combined together with the words-on-screen, I think it all might fall a bit short. While the words give it a storyline, there may be too much going on at once.

Whether it’s great or not, it’s all part of the journey. 👍
